Give credit where credit is due!!
My son Michael is an athlete. He plays baseball and basketball. He attends Hillcrest Christian School. He recently decided that he was going to switch schools to the public school to play baseball. Well, when the teachers/coaches at Hillcrest found out they sat Michael down on two different days and practically begged him to stay, giving him many reasons to stay a cougar...by his basketball coach he was told that "he was a leader", that he had a way of "motivating the team"....well well...I guess Michaels hard work and dedication meant nothing!!! Last night at the awards ceremony for basketball one of the awards was given for leadership, motivating the team etc... one, forget one...many would think that michael would get it, well he didnt...infact the one who got it was probably in as much shock as some of us in the crowd!!! The child who got it is just that a child so I wont list reasons why I feel Michael deserved it more....But what I will say is this....coaches need to realize the power they have in encouraging AND discouraging a child. In many cases a coach has much more power than a parent alone! Some lessons Michael learned last night are....dont believe or trust anyone who says "Michael, you can trust me"....he learned that someones "word" means nothing, he learned that nomatter how much hard work you put into something unless you kiss the rear of a coach or dig deep in those pockets there is no payoff!! I wonder if this coach even realizes the lessons he taught Michael last night....Im guessing NOT and I also guessing he doesnt care!! When someone has a job, opportunity handed to them by daddy they never learn to have to work for something!! At this point I count down the days til gradution!! Maybe college will be more of a fair game!!
